Truth be Told: Wanna Level Up? Write Things Down!

Listen to this article

I know I know I recently did an article endorsing the need to give ourselves some credit. However, when it comes to remembering things, in this area, we give ourselves, a bit, too much credit.

Let’s talk about the time you had that thing to do that you were always so close to getting done, because you didn’t actually, really forget, but you did, and in the end, you were certain that it would’ve gotten done, had you just written it down?

Sure, you are wondering how am I aware of that, about you. Please, find solace in knowing that you’re not alone; it’s a widely experienced thing.

Let’s talk about the time you had that thing to do that you were always so close to getting done, because you didn’t actually, really forget…

We tend to trust that we won’t forget and that we will do it, but, in doing so, we forget just how fast life happens. On average, we have around 6000 thoughts per day. Now, compound that with the distractions of our immediate environment, our phones, jobs and family. Need I go on?

You get to resolution, by asking yourself, what is it costing me? Let’s explore two ways. Firstly, what does it cost you when you don’t write those, necessary, things down? There’s:

  1. Punishing yourself because you knew better.

  2. Feeling of forgetfulness and embarrassment.

  3. A stained reputation, owed to the unreliability that your absentmindedness presents.

  4. Overcompensation, to make amends and catch-up.

All missed opportunities to level up.

We tend to trust that we won’t forget and that we will do it, but, in doing so, we forget just how fast life happens.

Secondly, consider what will it cost you if you were to actually just write what you need to, in the moment that it comes up? At most, you give up a few minutes, of your time. In return, you’ve earned yourself clarity, time, productivity, focus, piece of mind, your goals, dreams, desires, security and the list goes on and on and on. Sounds fair, right?
